The rain has persisted here in Southeast Virginia - starting last night and throughout the day today. The good news here is that neither our canvass teams or, more importantly. the voters are letting that stop them. The enthusiasm that's out here is unique - I've never walked into a business to witness 5 people from all walks of life crowded around the television watching the political coverage, talking about the change that's happening. I've talked to people from my hotel, the coffeeshop, and the market - all of whom displayed their "I voted" sticker with pride. The young front desk worker told me that she told her supervisor that she had to leave early to go vote, that it was too important to get there late and not be able to vote. She shared with me that her son told her that tomorrow was going to be like Christmas. I've witnessed long lines of colorful umbrellas at several polling locations here in Hampton - this is an encouraging sign. We've already had several conversations with some young voters who still didn't know where their polling location was. The canvass teams were glad to provide that information. Here are some members!

Tara, a student at Old Dominion University and a canvasser in Virginia Beach, canvassed a house today that she will never forget! When she walked up to the house, she smelled smoke coming from inside and heard the smoke alarm going off. She knocked on the door and no one came to the door, so she quickly called 9-1-1. When the firefighters came to the house a few minutes later, they went inside and found food burning the stove without any sign of the residents. Lucky for the homeowners, they will have a house to come home to thanks to Tara! |

If you commit a felony, are arrested, serve your time to your community, and emerge someone looking to start a new life ... should you be allowed to vote? I think the answer is pretty clear. You served your time - you are ready to lead a new life and have proven that to your community - you should be out there casting votes. Besides, there is a process you can follow to have your rights restored. This is especially true for young Virginians who still have way more of their life ahead of them than behind them. Virginia Beach street teams have encountered several young people that want to register to vote but cannot because they are felons, and even some registered voters who have had their rights taken away due to past felony convictions. Approximately 300,000 felons in the Commonwealth of Virginia are disenfranchised. It is clear that this year more than ever, young people are interested in participating in the political process. The Virginia Beach team is encouraging anyone interested in having their rights restored to visit this link and follow the necessary steps: link. |

Just heard from our team down in VA Beach, seems that had a pretty good day. Chrishanna and Ally went to oceanfront in Virginia Beach one evening to gather vote pledges from local young people. The first stop they made was a coffee chain; the cashier signed a pledge and gave them some tips on where to go to talk with other young Democrats. The second stop was a nearby popcorn store. Inside, they discovered that the store was owned by Jody Wagner, a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 2009! After sampling some popcorn, they discussed the issues with patrons and store employees ... always looking to collect as many vote pledges as possible. Later that evening, they walked into a bar and met a middle-aged lady who was out of the age bracket for a Young Democrat, but nevertheless told them she respected what they were doing. She even invited them to a party she was having later on in the week! Overall, the Virginia Beach community is friendly and also super excited about the political process! |
